Types of Demographic Data
Demographers use data to describe and analyzed the structure and evolution of populations. Data used by demographers come in many forms and shapes. But we can generally classify these data in two groups:
- Data sources that provide information on stocks
- Data sources that provide information on flows.
Data on stocks usually produce a count of individual members of a population at a particular point in time. These are generally a snapshot of the population size and of its composition (e.g., by age, gender or race) as of a particular date (e.g., May 15th 2010). Data on flows provide information on entries and exits from a population between two points in time. These often come from registration systems.
